Most simply put,pharmacokinetics(PK) is how the body affects the drug whilepharmacodynamics(PD) is how the drug affects the body.Please explain the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of either a stimulant, antidepressant, anti-psychotic, mood stabilizer, or anti-anxiety medication.The pharmacokinetics of various drugs depends on several factors. The way the drug is administered, the length time it takes the drug to work, how fast it gets there, and how much of the drug actually reaches the intended site, and the fat solubility. The walls of the intestines, blood vessels, and neurons are composed of fats calledlipids. Therefore, the more fat soluble a drug is, the more easily it cross the blood-brain barrier.The pharmacodynamics is how the drug affects the body.This process involves 11 mechanisms.The text however uses the broad terms of agonism and antagonism.One assists or facilitates and the other interferes with the cell functioning.An agonist facilitates an action, and increases the probability of the cell firing naturally.The antagonist interferes with an action and decreases the probability of the cells firing naturally.In turn one will either take longer for the drug to take effect or be effective at all and one will all the drug to take its course and work as intended.Ingersoll, R. Belmont, CA: Cengage Learning.H.GPharmacokinetics consists of how one’s body metabolizes and eliminated drugs. The most common way that individuals receive antidepressants is oral administration. Once one has taken the medication, it will have to go through the bloodstream and pass through membranes to reach the brain in which the medication may begin to work throughout the body or the drug may begin to be distributed. It may take longer for some because of the way that the medication is administered. Depending on how much of the medication reaches the brain will determine rather an individual’s doses needs to stay the same or be changed. The most common metabolizing drugs are the cytochrome P450 enzyne family. With positive results, the medication begins to improve one’s depression symptoms.Pharmacodynamics is how drugs affect the nervous system. Medications/drugs changes the way the nervous system processes different things. For example, antidepressants may change the way an individual experiences depression or it may reduce the symptoms of depression by changing different functions within the brain.
